Saturday, February 6, 2016, Westside Christian Academy hosted the first race of their Fourth Annual Sumter Series, The Westside Christian Academy Resolution Race 5K. The Sumter series is an event that emphasizes health and community throughout the year. This event includes eight running races during the calendar year according to The City of Sumter.

The race focuses on health and community but also celebrates physical, spiritual, civic and environmental recovery. When completing registration, participants of the race are signed up for all eight races. The registration packet includes everything needed to participate and the cost is a one fee of one hundred dollars. The proceeds from the race benefit various organizations around Sumter County.

The first race was held in the area around Westside Christian Academy from 9:30am until 11:30am. The route was timed with chip devices that were included in the registration packet along with each participant’s t-shirt and bib number. During the race supporters stood on the sidelines cheering on the runners.

While supporting the participants, the crowd along with Westside Academy’s principal, Maureen Hickok Dunton, also enjoyed Christian music, refreshments and each other. When the race came to an end everyone gathered together in the parking area of the school for recognition of top runners. Prizes were awarded to the overall male and female winners and to age group winners.

Seven races are left and will last until November, they include: The Tuomey Foundation 5-Miler, the Young Professionals of Sumter and City of Sumter’s Recovery Road Race (5K/10K), the United Way Derby Day Sumter 5K, the Hot Pursuit 5K, the Sumter County Library’s Forrest Ray 5K, the Sumter Sunrise Rotary 5K, and the YMCA’s Turkey Trot.
